S7 SOCCER ACADEMY played there first 11 a side game last night against Thwaites' in preparation for the Orphanage Cup which kicks off on Monday 16th April.
The kick off was slightly delayed due to pitch invasion that occured from the local gypsy campsite!!
S7 started strongly and took an early lead through Jake Errey on 5 minutes, a good delivery from Daniel Stubberfield ended with Errey finishing well at the back post.
The lead was doubled soon after, the impressive David Hickey playing his first full game for almost 4 years played a great diagonal pass to Jordan Macquarrie who cut inside 2 defenders before unleasing an unstoppable shot inside the far post.
Twaites' almost got themselves straight back into the game but some good defending from Ellis Gallaher saw a chance cleared off the goal line.
In the 30th minute the game looked over as a contest, Mo Nabeel was brought down right on the edge of the penalty area at first glance it looked as though the referee had awarded a penalty but he gave a free-kick on the 18 yard line. Lewis Hamlin arrowed the resulting free-kick into the far corner making it 3-0.
5 minutes later Daniel Stubberfield made it 4-0! After a good build up he played a neat one two on the edge of the area with Hamlin and curled a left footed strike into the roof of the net.
Twaites' created very litle in the first half due to the impressive Nathan Sargeson and Jake Errey who snuffed out any potential attacks.
The second half continued as the first ended with S7 creating lots of chances, the best falling to Shaun Corran who fluffed his lines from 8 yards. A combination of poor finishing and a pitch that resembled a swamp more and more with every passing minute meant that S7 were unable to extend ther lead.
Credit must be given to Thwaites' who fought their way back into the game in tough conditions albeit by being awarded a soft penalty, Corran was adjudged to have blocked a cross with his hand and the referee pointed to the spot without hesitation. The resulting penalty was cooly slotted past Martin Gillibrand who until that point had very little to do.
Thwaites then pulled another back when John Metcalfe burst between 2 defenders before smashing a fierce shot in at the near post to make it 4-2.
S7 created more chances of their own with the industrious Zack Dale going close on a couple of occasions but again poor finshing kept the scoreline to 4-2, all in all a good workout and S7 will go into the Orphange Cup very confident especially with players like Chris Mason and Jack Brierley (who didnt play due to family commitments) to come back into the squad.
